Hyperhidrosis treatment
Stop the sweats!
Everyone sweats. We all know how it feels to be hot and bothered during the summer months, especially when we have to travel on hot busses or trains or are packed into busy shops. But, for some people sweating isn’t a normal experience which can be resolved by a nice cool shower and a spritz of anti-perspirant deodorant. For some people sweating is so severe it controls all aspects of their life and can have a huge impact upon their mental and physical health.
Unfortunately for some people, excessive sweating is a very regular occurrence and one which causes a great deal of anxiety and worry. The more anxious you become, the more you sweat. It is a natural and vital bodily function, but for some people, it’s devastating.

Long term results
Effective & safe treatment
There are a variety of different causes for excess sweating and for most people the solutions are limited. Many clients will come to the clinic and recall a whole list of things they’ve tried to stop the sweats, from caustic antiperspirant treatments, to cooling solutions, some clients will go to work with a number of shirts to wear throughout the day, and will have patches and pads placed in their armpits to absorb the sweat. None if it is helpful long term and as a result people will feel their lives are being restricted by the condition.
Hyperhidrosis
Treatments
Most people affected will already know to avoid consuming spicy foods, fatty foods, and caffeine as these have been identified as common triggers for excessive sweating. They will also understand that wearing loose-fitting clothes made from natural fibres are helpful in allowing air to circulate around the skin.
Antiperspirant deodorants are important. Many people affected will have tried many different brands before they come to the clinic. Antiperspirants containing Aluminium Chloride, are considered to be the most effective at treating excessive sweating.
Products such as absorbent foot and armpit pads can offer extra protection. Botulinum Toxin can be used to treat excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis treatment, and has been approved by the MRHA to treat the symptoms of sweating when topical medicines are not working effectively.
Any part of the body experience overactive sweat glands but the most common are underarms, palms, feet, forehead and upper lip. All of these areas can be treated with Botulinum Toxin.
Frequently asked questions
Your questions answered
Although we don’t know exactly why excessive sweating starts, why it affects some people and not others, it has been linked it to over-activity in the sympathetic nervous system. Specifically, to the Thoracic Sympathetic Ganglion Chain.
This chain runs along the vertebra of the spine inside the chest cavity and controls the glands responsible for perspiration throughout the entire body. Depending on which part of the chain
becomes overactive, different parts of the body become affected and as a result they will sweat.
Botulinum Toxin is injected into the affected areas and temporarily blocks chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. If the sweat glands don’t receive the chemical signals telling them to sweat, the sweating stops. It’s as simple as that. Clients often describe this treatment as life changing and as a result it is one of my favourite treatments to perform as it has a huge impact upon my client’s quality of life. It is no exaggeration to say that clients go on to describe how they have been able to change career, get carried, travel, and simply feel confident that they have control in their life after treatment.
Anyone who wishes to reduce the amount of sweat they produce in targeted areas. (usual contraindications to botulinum toxin treatment apply)
Most areas which sweat excessively, most commonly:
- Armpits
- Feet
- Hands
- Face
The treatment takes about 30 minutes, depending upon the size of area being treated. There is no downtime, however it’s important not to wear deodorant on the day of treatment so generally it’s advisable to have treatment on a day when you can go home, Weekend appointments are generally available and are often ideal for this treatment.
Most people start to notice the results within 1-2 weeks and the effects last for around 6-7 months. Having the treatment twice a year is enough for most clients to maintain results.
Nowhere! It is simply not produced. All untreated areas of your body continue to produce the same amount of sweat as they normally would. You will notice nothing, other than a relief from the sweating in the problem areas.
